About Me

Hi there, I’m Lara Cain Gray (BA Hons, Grad Dip, PhD, NS, GSOH). I’m a Brisbane-based freelance writer, editor and blogger. My professional past includes stints as an academic researcher, librarian and museum curator. These days, I’m seeking that elusive work/life balance by working from home whilst tripping over toys.

I enjoy writing social commentary, book reviews, travel tales and therapeutic ravings about being a parent. As well as this blog, my work has appeared in a range of academic and popular publications including the Queensland Historical Atlas, Mamamia and Brisbane’s Child.

I also write slick web copy for business sites, corporate newletters, brochures and ghost blogs. Visit my PressFolio for examples of what I can do.

Get in touch today if you need charming words.

This Charming Mum is my sharing space. It’s cheaper than therapy. Pull up a couch.

My amazing son, under my work desk … shortly before he ate my French dictionary. I guess this is what they call work/life balance?

“I find that there are many gifts in this space of quiet pausing between who I was and who I will become.” (From Buddhism for Mothers by Sarah Napthali).

‘What’s writing really about? It’s trying to take fuller possession of the reality of your life – to attack it and get it under control.’ (Ted Hughes)

Lol, thanks! It shows my age – bit of an ’80s flashback. Looking forward to reading more of your blog now I’ve discovered it :)

Goodness me, a doctor! You’ve kept that hidden (other than on this “About Me” page, of course, which I confess I have hitherto neglected to read). And I bet you had to study for yours, unlike Professor Clive Palmer. I’m impressed.

Yeah, I do a pretty good job of hiding it. As in, you’d be forgiven for gasping ‘who, her?’ while you watch me searching for my glasses when they’re actually on my head or some similar act of brilliance. I like to think of it as a dormant qualification. One day it’ll come in handy again…I’m sure…I hope…

It has had its highlights Renee, although the pace is an awful lot slower right now!

What an impressive background! I have to laugh at the photo of your son under the desk… I can see that happening in my house too!

Hi there, I came across your website and wanted to touch base to see if you were interested in reviewing some of our Scholastic children’s books. You seem to have a really great following. Drop me a line and let me know and I can pop you on the mailing list.
